This sculpture represents a selkie, which according to Celtic mythology is a creature that is part human and part seal. Based on this body of traditional Irish folklore, there is a fisherman's tale about a seal that transforms itself into a woman by shedding its skin and then may live on land for a brief time only. She must however, return to the sea and assume her form as a seal, or forever be tied to the land never to see her true home again.

This was a commissioned piece. The patron who commissioned this sculpture was inspired by an earlier work called "The Ascent."
